John M Hunter's Housewife

John M Hunter from Houlton Maine, enlisted in E company of the 1st Maine Cavalry on October 19th, 1861 at 20 years age as a private.
He reenlisted on December 29, 1863.
Promoted to corporal in 1864.
Was killed in the charge on Lee's trains at Little Sailor's Creek, April 6, 1865.

His housewife, or sewing kit, pictured below, is in the Civil War Life ~ Soldier's Museum in Fredericksburg, VA. It is marked on the outside with his initials "J.M.H." and regiment "1 ME CAV."
