Dahlgren 50 pounder rifle
When ever searching for anything Dahlgren this image is bound to appear. Since there was a drawing from the Archives in Arming the Fleet, and it fit my time-frame, I made one.
I included the extra material and raised aft eyebolt as in the photo, which is different from the drawing.
XV inch Dahlgren gun
Finishing up the redo of the IX/iron carriage model, then finishing the XI iron pivot gun, brought me back to the XV inch Dalhgren tube I had started. I don't plan on making any more than the tube for this one, so to help anyone wanting to make this one,
I modeled in a touch-hole and an elevation-screw hole. This way someone can make it a fortification piece, or a naval gun. This is the 177 inch over-all model.
Ran into some trouble with the printer, but got it working again and finally printed this one; XI inch Dahlgren on the iron pivot carriage. I was a little surprized seeing how much larger the XI tube was next to the IX. This one got printed as one of the guns Comstellation carried.
The Dahlgren came out so nice I was encouraged to print it's partner, the 100# Parrot.
Cannon-Obusier of 80# for French Steam Frigate L'Orenoque
The same fella for whom I made guns for his Harriett Lane model, is now building a 1:100 scale model of the French steam frigate L'Orenoque (1848). None of the vessel's main battery are modeled, apparently, but there's 6 80# 22cm shell-guns on the spar deck.
The model came with some white-metal guns that are too small, and don't look anything like what the ship's supposed to have. This is where I come in...
He posted a portion of some plans showing these guns, from which I made a 3D model. When I added a figure for scale, the muzzle was as high as his face, so I scaled the carriage down to about the height of my 8 inch shell-gun.
This still seemed top-heavy to me, when someone on the Model Ship World forums linked me to Lafay's images of French Naval Artillery. Plate 7 was the carriage I made, with some different minor details, but plate 17 struck me as the one I wanted.
Since I already put some work into the other carriage, I decided to go ahead and finish it acording to LaFay plate #7, rather than the drawing I was given (because it had measurements). Both models are on Thingiverse.
The 7 printed guns were mailed and arrived in good order, where the fellow building L'Orenoque took better quality photos than I did.
